报告题目:Mapping Large-scale Virtual Scenes with Low Isometric Distortion

报告摘要:Virtual reality (VR) applications prefer real walking to provide highly immersive presence than other locomotive methods, such as walk-in-place. However, finding feasible mappings from large virtual scenes into small real working spaces remains an open challenging problem. In this paper, we present a novel divide-and-conquer method to compute high quality real walking mappings for large-scale virtual scenes. Our method consists of two steps. First, the large virtual scene is decomposed into small local patches. Second, a small subset of local patches is mapped into the real space one by one with smoothness constraints. The assembled mapping is then optimized with a global optimization. Due to mapping a set of small local patches and direct treating the low isometric distortion as our optimization objective each time, our method can generate high-quality real walking mappings to adapt to substantially large virtual scenes. Compared with state-of-the-art methods, our method can handle much larger virtual scenes with lower isometric distortion, and thus provides better user experience. Experimental results and a formative user study have evaluated the practicability and feasibility of our method.

报告人简介:刘利刚,中国科学技术大学教授,博士生导师,中国科学院“百人计划”,中国科学院特聘研究员。于2001年在浙江大学获得应用数学博士学位;2001年至2004年期间在微软亚洲研究院工作;2004年至2011年期间在浙江大学数学系工作。2009年至2011年期间,在美国哈佛大学进行学术访问研究。研究兴趣包括计算机图形学,3D几何建模与处理,3D打印中的几何优化等。主持国家自然科学基金项目4项,2012年获得国家自然科学“优秀青年基金”项目。曾获得“微软青年教授”奖(2006)、陆增镛CAD&CG高科技奖一等奖(2010)、国家自然科学奖二等奖(2013)等奖项。国际会议GMP 2017大会共同主席,SPM 2014, SGP 2015, CVM 2016, CAD/Graphics 2017的论文共同主席。学术期刊IEEE TVCG, IEEE CG&A, CGF, CAGD, The Visual Computer及《软件学报》编委。
